AFOR Experts' Knee Symposium

New and old thinking in primary total knee arthroplasty / Lucerne

31. 05. 2012 – 01. 06. 2012

Dear Colleagues,

Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) is one of the most challenging topics in Orthopaedic Surgery. During the last 50 years it seems to have reached a standard as a treatment procedure for severe knee arthritis, performed more than 3.000.000 times worldwide. With high success rates it suggests restoration of patient activity, life quality and dramatic improvement for an aging population.

However, surgeon experts dealing with TKA patients in their daily practice may have a more sophisticated picture of success in treating knee arthritis. On the one hand, there seems to be an enormous impact of patient individual response to treatment with healing issues, pain sensation, functional results and expectations. On the other hand, similar treated patients show dramatic differences in recovery under different post-operative rehabilitation concepts. This leaves the surgeon expert with the feeling of a reduced impact of his implant and surgical choices on the overall outcome.

Modern Total Knee Arthroplasty should envision the absolute success in knee arthroplasty. Thus, surgeons should be aware of the impact of patient individuality aspects, as much as impact of modern kinematic implant concepts, as much as surgical skills and post-operative treatment.

Based on the highly successful Lucerne Knee Course 2010 the AFOR invites all professionals in the broad field of Total Knee Arthroplasty to Lucerne from May 31st to June 1st 2012. We will discuss new and old thinking in this classic Orthopaedic field with a highly recognised international faculty. We will listen to lessons learned from the past and watch the projects designed for the future.

Lucerne in late spring is a wonderful place for a short getaway and reflection of our current understanding of Total Knee Arthroplasty. We hope to see you in Lucerne!
